Pearls and South Sea Pearls

There are mainly four different types of pearls, Akoya, Freshwater, South Sea and Tahitian. Each pearl type is unique with the color, size and shape. All these pearls are of the highest quality and if the brand is G. Dovtiwala and Co, no question of doubt arises.

1) Tahitian Pearls: Tahitian pearl is unique among gems because of its size, colors, the mirror-like shine, and the rainbow play of light. It comes from a black-lipped pearl oyster living in the perfect waters of the South Pacific atoll.

2) Tahitian Cultured Pearls: Black South Sea cultured pearls, better known as Tahitians, are native to French Polynesia. These black pearls are less expensive.

3) Freshwater Pearls: Freshwater pearls are noted for their wide range of color like white, silvery white, pink, salmon, red, copper, bronze, brown, lavender, purple, green, blue, cream, and yellow. Although white is the most common color, the most desirable are the pastel pinks, roses, lavenders, and purples. The different colors are a function of the mussel species, genetics, water quality, and the position of the pearl in the shell.

4) Freshwater Cultured Pearls: Cultured freshwater pearls mostly from China made in a freshwater mollusk in a lake, pond or river. They are similar in look to the Akoya pearls, but are less expensive because they are generally smaller and less symmetrical.

5) Chinese Pearls: These Pearls are of four types, i.e. natural, Dyed, Chemically Treated and Irradiated. We have all the varieties to cater to different costs and quality.

6) Japanese Pearls: The Japanese have been the undisputed champions of cultured pearl production for the last 100 years. This art has been handed down and closely guarded from generation to generation, ensuring the survival of the industry. The Japanese today continue to be large force in the international pearling industry.

7) South Sea Pearls: Southsea pearls are larger pearls that come in a range of light colors. Southsea pearls are harder to cultivate and therefore more expensive.

8) Akoya Pearls: Akoya pearls are the most popular pearl type. They are cultured in pearls from saltwater mollusks from Japan and China. Akoya pearls are popular for their luster and beauty.
